About this place
The Menla Retreat & Dewa Spa is a renowned, nonprofit retreat center and wellness resort nestled within the more than 130-hectare Catskill Forest Preserve in Phoenicia, New York. As a project of Tibet House US—co-founded by Robert and Nena Thurman and enthusiastically supported by the Dalai Lama—it combines traditional Tibetan healing arts with modern Western holistic medicine.
Highlights & Offerings
Dewa Spa: This world-class spa is known for authentic Tibetan treatments such as the KuNye massage, herbal baths, steam baths, saunas, and an outdoor pool. The water comes from the center’s own artesian mineral springs.
Retreats & Courses
Structured multi-day group retreats on topics such as Buddhism, yoga, meditation, holistic health, and shamanic healing are offered year-round and led by internationally renowned experts. Cuisine: Included in the stay are vegetarian and vegan farm-to-table buffets, some of which are prepared with fresh ingredients sourced directly from the resort’s organic garden.
Accommodations
Options range from luxurious private rooms and suites featuring Tibetan art to rustic communal cabins situated directly alongside a mountain stream. Surroundings: Located in a picturesque glacial valley, the car-free grounds offer numerous hiking trails, yoga and meditation huts, and campfire sites.
Location & Accessibility
The resort is located about a 2.5-hour drive north of New York City. To preserve the peaceful and meditative atmosphere, there is no general cell phone reception on the grounds; however, free Wi-Fi is available in all buildings. For outside guests who wish to use only the spa or wellness treatments, booking at least 48 hours in advance is recommended.
